Meet Kerri: Small Town Girl, Big City Style

Growing up in small town Mississippi, life for Kerri felt just as mundane and uninspired as the sense of style she was often surrounded by. She always felt a pull towards the bustle and glamour of city life. Thus, her move to Boston meant more than just a change in address - it represented the opportunity she always sought to experiment with her personal style.

“[My personal style] was definitely always a rollercoaster of inconsistency,” Kerri says with a laugh. “I used to wear a lot of Brandy Melville, which consisted of all black, white, gray, and the occasional burgundy as my pop of color. I went through a short chic phase, but that was too girly for me. I also briefly tried out a bohemian, 70s-inspired hippy phase. It wasn’t until I came to Boston though that I finally tried street style and it just stuck with me.”

Clad in a frilly white peasant blouse and cotton trousers, Kerri doesn’t exactly exude street style at first glance. Yet, in pairing such an outfit with a pair of checkered Vans and the edgy accessories that she does, she makes the ideal of “street style” her own. It’s in this way that Kerri’s personal style is encompassed most - feminine, but not girly, and chic, yet with a subtle edge.

“[My style] could be described as experimental, I would say,” Kerri commented. “I always like to change it up and I’m never consistent about anything.”

As someone who has also fluctuated between a variety of styles, I maintain a similar approach to fashion and my own personal style as Kerri. Rather than limiting herself to a singular standard of dress, the outfits she gravitates towards can be dependent on everything from the season to her mood. One thing I know for sure about Kerri is that she’s unpredictable and unfazed when it comes to taking risks, both of which translate into the pieces that fill her closet. While I may not ever be quite as daring as Kerri is with her outfit choices, I was pleasantly surprised to find that our difference in style didn’t necessarily mean a difference in what influences them or in the way we value fashion.

Despite her roots, Kerri has adopted a style that’s a quirky take on urban streetwear. She never allowed the dull and simple tastes of her small town limit her from embracing vibrant and daring trends. More than anything, her style is proof that people aren’t always a product of their environment.
